Comfort Zone (Shelter in Place), 2023
Fabric, Sand, discomfort, performance
Sometimes, we get stuck in the feeling of comfort. We get trapped in the notion that this feeling is the same as protection. Comfort is a sand bag- It seals out growth and lulls you into a state of complacency. What defines comfort?
Is it something warm and soft and easy to get imprisoned in?
Is it familiar like the folds of your comforter and the scent of a former lover? Does its weight sink into you until you cannot stand it anymore…
One cannot be in a state of desire if one only breathes comfort.
This performance piece aims to explore the physical manifestation of comfort. While at first, the weighted sand pillows elicit feelings of protection and warmth, after sitting in the contraption for an extended period of time- the mental, emotional, and physical stress is too much for the individual to withstand. This piece can also be viewed as an installation, with a projected video on the sculptural form of the pillows. Furthermore, this piece can also be viewed with simply the form and photographic prints to show the performance aspect.
