Community Drop-in, 2023
Social exchange
As a practicing sculptor, nothing goes to waste. In a college house full of four girls, each unable to skate (except for perhaps one), we were left with a half-pipe that took up the entirety of our shed. It was sitting there, collecting heaps of dust and cob-webs. If I had to limit it down to three things that make up my practice, they would be: getting messy, having fun, and problem solving. This half-pipe spoke to me- it was begging to be used and transformed.
Community Drop-In was a social sculptural exchange which involved the skateboarding community of Boulder and a group of artists, filmmakers, and friends. As me and the other participating artists provided the half-pipe, tempera paint, beer, music, and media, the skateboarders in exchange provided the art, mark making, and skills required to skate. The end result was a completely transformed half-pipe into a beautiful mural of colors and marks from the skateboarders. You don’t have to be an “artist” to make art- sometimes all you need is a community willing to take a chance and have fun.
